Live-streaming of court proceedings
Topic: Judiciary: Independence, Structure, Judicial Review and Activism · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Live-streaming means broadcasting court hearings live, so that anyone can watch them online. It makes courts more open and helps people see how justice is done. This supports judicial accountability, the idea that judges must answer for how they use their power. The Supreme Court allowed live-streaming in principle in Swapnil Tripathi (2018).
Example
Hearings before the Supreme Court's constitution benches (benches of at least five judges that decide major questions about the Constitution) have been streamed live since September 2022.
