Majority system
Also called: Two-round system, Run-off system · Topic: Elections and the Electoral System · NCERT: Class 9, Ch 7 "Elections"
Meaning
In a majority system, a candidate needs more than half (over 50%) of the votes to win. If no candidate crosses this mark, the top candidates face each other in a second round of voting. Because of this, the winner can always claim the support of most voters.
Example
France uses this system for its presidential election. Class 9 NCERT also describes it through the imaginary country "Ratnadweep".
Don't confuse with
- First-past-the-post (FPTP): used for India's Lok Sabha and assemblies. The candidate with the most votes wins, even without a majority. In Class 8 NCERT's class election, Gurmat wins with only 12 of 33 votes.
