Minimum area of non-interference
Topic: Political Theory: Freedom and Rights · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 2 "Freedom"
Meaning
The minimum area of non-interference is the heart of negative liberty, which means freedom from outside interference. It is a protected zone of personal life where a person may "do, be or become" what they wish. No outside authority may enter this zone, because human dignity needs it. If the zone is too small, dignity suffers. How large it should be is always a matter of debate. Isaiah Berlin's "Two Concepts of Liberty" (1958) is the classic source.
Example
NCERT asks whether what we wear at school, on the sports field or at the office falls inside this zone. Or can the state, a religious authority, the ICC or the CBSE decide it for us? In India, Arts. 19-22 work as limits that keep the state out of such areas.
Don't confuse with
- Positive liberty: this is "freedom to", or self-mastery. It looks at the conditions a person needs to grow, such as education and freedom from poverty. It is not about a zone the state must stay out of.
