National identity
Topic: Preamble and the Philosophy of the Constitution · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 10 "The Philosophy of the Constitution"
Meaning
National identity is a common Indian identity that the Constitution builds. It sits alongside people's religious and linguistic identities. It does not erase them. When the two clash, the Constitution prefers the national identity. Class 11 NCERT says the aim was true fraternity (a feeling of brotherhood), not forced sameness.
Example
The framers rejected separate electorates, where each community votes only for its own candidates. They did not do this because difference was bad. They did it because separate electorates harmed a "healthy national life". Sardar Patel told the Constituent Assembly on 25 May 1949, "in India there is only one community".
Don't confuse with
- Forced uniformity: this means one culture imposed on all. India's national identity lets group identities live on, through minority rights in Arts. 29-30 and special arrangements for some states under Art. 371A.
