Political theory

Polity & Governance glossary

Topic: Political Theory: Freedom and Rights · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 1 "Political Theory: An Introduction"

Meaning

Political theory is the careful, step-by-step study of the ideas behind political life. It looks at values such as freedom, equality, justice, democracy and secularism. It also looks at principles such as the rule of law, separation of powers and judicial review. It explains what these words mean, tests the arguments of thinkers such as Kautilya, Plato, Aristotle, Rousseau, Marx, Gandhi and Ambedkar, and asks how far real laws and institutions live up to them.

Example

The ideas of these thinkers shaped India's Constitution. Freedom and equality appear in the Preamble, untouchability was abolished, and Gandhian ideas went into the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP). NCERT's queue example shows the method. Equality means everyone gets an equal chance, yet separate counters for old and disabled people are still fair.

Don't confuse with

  • Politics: politics is the actual bargaining over decisions by governments and citizens. Political theory steps back and studies the values and principles that should guide that bargaining.
