Socio-Economic and Caste Census 2011
Also called: SECC 2011 · Topic: Gender, Religion and Caste in Politics · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Socio-Economic and Caste Census 2011 (SECC 2011) was a door-to-door survey of households across India. It recorded each household's economic condition, such as how poor or deprived it was, along with its caste. The socio-economic data were released in 2015 and are used to choose beneficiaries for welfare schemes. The caste data were never published. That is why the last full, published caste count in India is still the Census of 1931.
Example
The SECC 2011 socio-economic data are used to pick beneficiaries for PMAY-G (rural housing) and Ayushman Bharat (health cover).
Don't confuse with
- Census: the regular national count of population. Since 1951 it has counted only SCs and STs, not other castes. Census 2027 will count all castes.
- Bihar caste survey (2023): a survey by one state government, whose caste figures were made public.
