Sons of the soil

Polity & Governance glossary

Also called: Movements against outsiders, Sons of the soil movements · Topic: Regional Aspirations: J&K, Punjab, the North-East and Accommodation · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 6 "Citizenship"; Class 12, Ch 7 "Regional Aspirations"

Meaning

"Sons of the soil" is a demand that jobs, land and facilities in a region go only to local people. It treats anyone from outside the region as a threat. Parties often take up these demands, and they sometimes turn violent. They matter because they clash with the idea that every citizen is a full and equal member anywhere in India.

Example

The slogan "Mumbai for Mumbaikars" and the Assam Movement against outsiders are classic cases. In 2023 the Punjab and Haryana High Court struck down Haryana's law that kept 75% of private jobs for locals (verify current status).

Don't confuse with

  • Secessionist movement: this demands a separate country. A sons-of-the-soil movement stays inside India and only wants locals to come first.
