Statutory town
Topic: Urban Local Government: Municipalities and Cities · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
A statutory town is any place that a law has notified as urban. It has a municipal corporation, municipality, cantonment board or notified area committee. Because the law created it, it has its own urban local body (a city or town government). The Census uses this category, together with census towns, to count India's urban population.
Example
Census 2011 counted 4,041 statutory towns out of 7,933 towns in all. Chennai is a statutory town. It is run by the Greater Chennai Corporation.
Don't confuse with
- Census town: a census town is called urban only because it meets the Census tests for population, density and non-farm work. It has no municipal body and is still run by a panchayat.
