Meaning

Swachh Survekshan is a yearly survey that ranks Indian cities by how clean they are. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has run it since 2016 under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U). It pushes cities to compete on waste collection, sanitation and public toilets. This makes municipal performance visible to citizens.

Example

Indore topped the survey seven years in a row, from 2017 to 2023, sharing first place with Surat in 2023. In the 2024-25 edition, with awards given on 17 July 2025, past toppers were put into a separate Super Swachh League, which Indore led.
