Meaning
The Telangana armed struggle was a peasant uprising from 1946 to 1951 in the Telangana region of Hyderabad State. It was led by the Communists. Peasants rose against feudal oppression, meaning control by landlords and the Nizam's rule over poor farmers. It was part of the wider people's movement against the Nizam, which also faced attacks from the Razakars.
Example
After Operation Polo in September 1948, Hyderabad acceded to India. The Communist Party of India (CPI) still kept fighting, now against the Indian state. The struggle was crushed and finally called off in 1951.
Don't confuse with
- Telangana movement (statehood): this was a later demand for a separate Telangana state, seen in the 1969 'Jai Telangana' agitation and the TRS from 2001. It led to the state of Telangana on 2 June 2014. The armed struggle was about land and feudal oppression, not statehood.
