Totalitarianism

Meaning

Totalitarianism is the most extreme form of dictatorship (absolute power that no constitution or law can limit). One party or one leader tries to control everything: politics, the economy, society and even people's private lives. It does this through an official ideology (a fixed set of ideas everyone must accept), propaganda and terror. Hannah Arendt described it in 1951. It is the opposite of a liberal democracy, where rights, courts and a free press limit power.

Example

Nazi Germany under Hitler and the USSR under Stalin are the classic examples. NCERT's "Story of Shane" shows North Korea, where the state watches and shapes even ordinary daily life.

Don't confuse with

  • Authoritarianism: it also concentrates power that answers to no one and limits freedoms. However, it does not try to take total control over private life and beliefs.
