We, the People of India
Topic: Preamble and the Philosophy of the Constitution · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 10 "The Philosophy of the Constitution"
Meaning
"We, the People of India" are the opening words of the Preamble. They declare that the people made and adopted the Constitution through their representatives in the Constituent Assembly. No king or outside power handed it down to them. This makes popular sovereignty, the idea that final authority belongs to the people, the source of the Constitution's authority. The phrase is borrowed from the US Constitution. Whether the Constitution can truly claim this without a referendum (a direct public vote on the text) is still debated.
Example
The Preamble ends with the words "IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION."
Don't confuse with
- Referendum: the people did not vote directly on the Constitution. They acted through the Assembly. India also has no referendum, initiative or recall in its normal working.
