Women-friendly panchayat

Polity & Governance glossary

Topic: Panchayati Raj: Rural Local Government · NCERT: Class 9, Ch 6 "Democracy"

Meaning

A women-friendly panchayat helps women take part in decisions and looks after their health, safety and livelihoods (ways of earning a living). It is one of the nine themes used to localise the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which means turning global development goals into village-level targets. Mahila sabhas, meetings of a village's women voters, often held before the gram sabha, help bring women's concerns forward.

Example

South Manubankul gram panchayat in Tripura is given as an example of a women-friendly panchayat (Class 9).

Don't confuse with

  • Women's reservation in panchayats (Article 243D): this is a constitutional rule that gives women seats and posts. A women-friendly panchayat is about how the panchayat actually works for women.
