The launch of ORV Sagar Manthan — an 89.5 m, ~5,900 tonne ocean research vessel built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, and billed as the largest research vessel built in an Indian shipyard [1] — marks a shift from chartered or foreign-built platforms to domestically constructed ones. Indigenous shipbuilding today underwrites both India's scientific reach and its strategic weight in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Scientific presence

Indigenous shipbuilding thus converts scientific ambition into sustained maritime capability: hulls built at home translate into data, minerals and presence owned at home. Deepening component-level indigenisation, expanding trained crew and survey scientists, and pairing exploration with environmental safeguards for the deep seabed will let platforms like Sagar Manthan anchor India's role as a credible net provider of ocean knowledge in the IOR.
