Self-reliance in defence means indigenous mastery over the design, development and integration of technologies that are denied or restricted through imports. DRDO's maiden flight-test of the 'Kusha' Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile on 23 July 2026 from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha, illustrates both the depth of this capability and its persistent gestation problem [1].

DRDO has therefore moved from component substitution towards whole-system indigenisation, with Kusha as its clearest recent evidence. Sustaining this shift demands concurrent engineering, deeper private-sector participation and early user involvement, so that trial success converts swiftly into inducted capability. Such a pipeline would make self-reliance the foundation of genuine strategic autonomy rather than an aspiration.
