The Indian Space Policy 2023 opened the entire space value chain to Non-Government Entities (NGEs) [1], and the count of space start-ups has risen from one in 2014 to about 266 [2] — culminating in Skyroot's Vikram-1 orbital launch of 18 July 2026 [3]. The growth is real; competitiveness, however, is still emerging.

Vikram-1 therefore marks credible entry, not yet arrival: India has proven it can build private orbital rockets, but competitiveness will be decided by repeat flights, cost discipline and export orders. Consolidating this requires a binding space activities law, sustained venture capital and anchor demand through IN-SPACe — converting a promising start-up count into a dependable commercial launch industry.
