POSHAN Abhiyaan sought to address malnutrition through convergence and technology. Critically evaluate its effectiveness a decade after launch.

In this answer
  1. Convergence: institutional gains
  2. Technology: measurable delivery reform
  3. Persisting weaknesses

Launched on 8 March 2018, POSHAN Abhiyaan was not a new feeding scheme but an architecture — converging existing nutrition programmes and layering real-time digital monitoring over them. Eight years on, its record shows strong process reform, but slower conversion into outcomes.

Convergence: institutional gains

  • Merger of Poshan Abhiyaan, Anganwadi Services and the Scheme for Adolescent Girls into Mission Poshan 2.0 (Budget 2021-22) created a single delivery architecture across 13.35 lakh Anganwadi Centres [1].
  • A life-cycle approach covering six categories — pregnant women, lactating mothers, children 0-6 years and adolescent girls — replaced siloed, age-fragmented targeting [1].
  • Jan Andolan components (Poshan Maah, Poshan Pakhwada) shifted nutrition from a departmental subject to a public campaign [1].

Technology: measurable delivery reform

  • Poshan Tracker (March 2021) replaced periodic paper registers with near real-time capture — 8.93 crore beneficiaries across all 28 states and 8 UTs, with 6.3 crore children (0-5 years) growth-monitored, nearly 94% coverage (May 2026) [2].
  • Aadhaar e-KYC and Facial Recognition for Take-Home Ration distribution curb ghost entries and last-mile leakage [3].
  • A 24-language interface and toll-free helpline 1515 widen accessibility; WHO has cited the platform as exemplary for routine nutrition data [2].

Persisting weaknesses

  • Outcomes trail process: NFHS-6 records stunting falling from 35.5% to 29.3%, yet close to three in ten children remain stunted [4].
  • Parliamentary scrutiny repeatedly flags fund under-utilisation and vacancies in Anganwadi worker/helper posts — digital dashboards cannot compensate for absent frontline staff [5].
  • Data-entry burden on Anganwadi Workers and uneven connectivity risk turning real-time reporting into a compliance ritual rather than a corrective tool [5].

POSHAN Abhiyaan's genuine achievement is that India now measures malnutrition almost as it happens; the deficit lies in acting on that visibility. Filling sanctioned Anganwadi posts, spending allocations fully, and using Tracker data for district-level course correction would convert measurement into nutrition outcomes — and keep India on course for SDG-2 (Zero Hunger) by 2030.
