UPSC Prelims 2024 Q69: Equivalent Ranks in Army, Navy, Air Force

Which of the following is/are correctly matched in terms of equivalent rank in the three services of Indian Defence forces?

| Sl.No. | Army | Airforce | Navy |

| 1 | Brigadier | Air Commodore | Commander |

| 2 | Major General | Air Vice Marshal | Vice Admiral |

| 3 | Major | Squadron Leader | Lieutenant Commander |

| 4 | Lieutenant Colonel | Group Captain | Captain |

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

  1. 1 and 4
  2. 1 and 3
  3. 2, 3 and 4
  4. 3 only

Answer: (d) 3 only

Statement-wise explanation

  • 1: incorrect — Brigadier (Army) and Air Commodore (Air Force) are equivalent one-star ranks. The Navy's one-star equivalent is Commodore, not Commander. A Commander is two ranks lower and equals a Lieutenant Colonel or Wing Commander.
  • 2: incorrect — Major General (Army) and Air Vice Marshal (Air Force) are equivalent two-star ranks. The Navy's two-star equivalent is Rear Admiral. Vice Admiral is a three-star rank, equal to Lieutenant General and Air Marshal.
  • 3: correct — Major (Army), Squadron Leader (Air Force) and Lieutenant Commander (Navy) are the same level. It is the third commissioned officer rank in each service, one step below Lieutenant Colonel, Wing Commander and Commander.
  • 4: incorrect — Group Captain (Air Force) and Captain (Navy) are equivalent, but both match Colonel in the Army, not Lieutenant Colonel. A Lieutenant Colonel equals a Wing Commander and a naval Commander.

How to eliminate

This question mostly tests recall, but you can narrow it down with partial knowledge. Row 1 uses a near-miss: the Navy's one-star rank is Commodore, and 'Commander' only looks like it. If you know that, options with row 1 drop out, leaving 'only 3' or '2, 3 and 4'. If you also know that 'Vice' Admiral is senior to 'Rear' Admiral, row 2 cannot be right, because a Vice Admiral is three-star and Major General is two-star. That removes the remaining option with row 2 in it. Row 4 can also be checked with one anchor: a naval Captain is a senior rank equal to an Army Colonel, not the junior Army Captain. Facts to remember: Commodore = Brigadier = Air Commodore (one-star); Rear Admiral = Major General = Air Vice Marshal (two-star); Captain (Navy) = Colonel = Group Captain.

Equivalent commissioned ranks in the Indian Armed Forces

The Army, Navy and Air Force all use the same ladder of commissioned officer ranks, though the titles differ. Equivalence decides seniority in joint postings, protocol and command of inter-service bodies.

Level Army Navy Air Force
Five-star (honorary) Field Marshal Admiral of the Fleet Marshal of the IAF
Four-star General Admiral Air Chief Marshal
Three-star Lieutenant General Vice Admiral Air Marshal
Two-star Major General Rear Admiral Air Vice Marshal
One-star Brigadier Commodore Air Commodore
Colonel Captain Group Captain
Lieutenant Colonel Commander Wing Commander
Major Lieutenant Commander Squadron Leader
Captain Lieutenant Flight Lieutenant
Lieutenant Sub Lieutenant Flying Officer

Common traps

  • Captain is a mid-level rank in the Army but a senior one in the Navy, where it equals Colonel.
  • Commander and Commodore sound alike but are two levels apart.
  • Vice Admiral is above Rear Admiral. In the Air Force, Air Marshal is above Air Vice Marshal.
  • Officers of one-star rank and above are flag officers in the Navy and air officers in the Air Force. In the Army, the term 'general officer' usually starts at Major General.

Why it matters The Chief of Defence Staff, created in 2019, is a four-star officer. The Inter-Services Organisations (Command, Control and Discipline) Act, 2023 lets a commander from one service exercise discipline over personnel from the others. Both depend on clear rank equivalence. Rank names also appear in gallantry award lists and appointment news, such as the Gaganyaan astronaut-designates, who are Group Captains (equal to Colonel).
