Basic economic activities
Topic: Scarcity, Choice and Economic Systems · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 1 "Introduction (Microeconomics)"
Meaning
Basic economic activities are the three things every society does with goods and services: production (making them), exchange (buying, selling or trading them) and consumption (using them to satisfy wants). NCERT calls these the basic economic activities. Every society carries them out under scarcity, which means its resources are limited compared with what people want. So each society has to choose how to produce, exchange and consume.
Example
A farmer in Punjab grows wheat (production). The farmer sells it at a mandi to a flour mill (exchange). A family in Delhi buys the flour and makes rotis (consumption). At each step, land, labour, money and time are limited, so choices have to be made.
Don't confuse with
- Scope of economics (consumption, production, distribution): this three-way split describes the parts of economics as a subject. In it, "distribution" means how national income is shared out as wages, profit, rent and interest. Basic economic activities list exchange, not distribution.
