Class limits

Indian Economy glossary

Also called: Lower class limit, Upper class limit · Topic: Economic Data: Census, NSS, Surveys and Statistical Tools · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 3 "Organisation of Data"

Meaning

Class limits are the two ends of a class. The smallest value a class can hold is the lower class limit. The largest is the upper class limit. The limits decide which observations go into which class. They are also used to work out the class interval (upper minus lower limit) and the class mark (the midpoint).

Example

In the class 800-899, the lower class limit is 800 and the upper class limit is 899. These are inclusive classes, so there is a gap before the next class starts at 900. To close the gap, half the gap (0.5) is subtracted from each lower limit and added to each upper limit, so the class becomes 799.5-899.5.

Don't confuse with

  • Class mark: the middle value of a class, (upper limit + lower limit)/2. It is not an end of the class.
