Component bar diagram

Indian Economy glossary

Also called: Sub-diagram · Topic: Economic Data: Census, NSS, Surveys and Statistical Tools · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 4 "Presentation of Data"

Meaning

A component bar diagram, also called a sub-diagram, is a bar split into parts. The full bar shows the total. Each part shows one component of that total. The diagram shows both the size of each part and how the parts relate to the whole.

Example

In NCERT's example from a Bihar district, the bar for girls aged 6-14 is split into enrolled and out-of-school parts, with 41.4% of girls out of school. The bar for boys shows that only 8.5% were out of school. The gap between girls and boys is clear at a glance.

Don't confuse with

  • Multiple bar diagram: puts separate bars side by side to compare sets of data, for example female literacy in 2001 and 2011. It does not split one bar into parts.
  • Pie diagram: shows the parts of a whole as slices of a circle, where 1% = 3.6°, not as sections of a bar.
