CPI for urban non-manual employees
Also called: CPI-UNME · Topic: Inflation and Index Numbers: CPI, WPI, IIP and the Deflator · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 7 "Index Numbers"
Meaning
The CPI for Urban Non-Manual Employees (CPI-UNME) was a consumer price index for city office workers and other non-manual employees. It was compiled by the CSO. It has been discontinued and replaced by CPI-Urban, which the NSO (MoSPI) compiles monthly. It matters mainly as a Prelims trap: "CPI-UNME is still compiled" is FALSE.
Example
NCERT uses CPI-UNME to explain why each CPI suits only its own group. It could not represent the President of India's cost of living, because that basket is not typical of urban non-manual employees. Its replacement, CPI-Urban (2012 = 100), stood at 129.3 in May 2017.
Don't confuse with
- CPI-Industrial Workers (CPI-IW): still compiled, by the Labour Bureau (base 2016). It is used to revise the Dearness Allowance.
- CPI-Urban: covers all urban households, not just non-manual employees. Together with CPI-Rural it forms CPI-Combined.
