Creator economy

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Sectors of the Indian Economy · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The creator economy is made up of independent content creators, such as YouTubers, podcasters and Instagram influencers. They earn from advertisements, subscriptions, brand deals and payouts from platforms. Most of this activity falls in the tertiary (service) sector. It matters because it gives young people self-employment that needs a phone and skills rather than a factory or an office.

Example

An Indian food vlogger earns from ads shown on their videos, from paid fan subscriptions and from a sponsored post for a spice brand. India hosted WAVES 2025 (World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit, Mumbai), where a US$1 bn creator fund was announced.

Don't confuse with

  • Gig economy: gig workers do short tasks for someone else through apps, such as deliveries or rides. Creators earn from content they make and own.
