Crop cutting experiment

Meaning

A crop cutting experiment (CCE) means actually harvesting the crop from a few randomly chosen plots and weighing it. This gives the average yield, meaning the output per hectare. Yield × area = production. States run CCEs under the General Crop Estimation Surveys (GCES), and NSO's Field Operations Division gives technical guidance and supervision. The results feed the crop production estimates of the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), called the advance estimates. The same yields are also used to settle insurance claims under PMFBY (Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana).

Example

Officials pick a random plot in a village. They harvest the wheat on it, weigh the grain and work out the yield per hectare. That yield is multiplied by the district's wheat area to estimate production. If the yield falls below the insured level, PMFBY claims are paid to farmers. Newer tools include the CCE-Agri app and YES-TECH, which estimates yields from satellite and remote-sensing data.

Don't confuse with

  • Agriculture Census: a complete count of farm holdings (11th round, 2021-22, MoA&FW). It does not measure yield by sample harvesting.
