Meaning

Demographic data are numbers about a country's population. They cover its size, density, sex ratio, literacy, migration, rural-urban split, birth and death rates, life expectancy, and workers (main and marginal). In India, the main source is the decennial Census, run by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India, under the Census Act 1948. The Sample Registration System (SRS) gives birth and death rates between censuses. These data are used for welfare coverage, delimitation of constituencies and survey sampling frames.

Example

Census 2011 counted 121.09 crore people. It recorded a sex ratio of 943, literacy of 74.04%, density of 382 per km² and decadal growth of 17.7%.
