Developmental goals
Topic: Measuring Development: Income, HDI and Sustainability · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 1 "Development"
Meaning
Developmental goals are the things people want for a better life. They include more income. They also include things money cannot measure, such as equal treatment, freedom, security and respect. Each person's goals depend on their life situation, so different people have different goals. Sometimes these goals even conflict: one person's gain can be another person's loss.
Example
NCERT (Class 10) shows that landless rural labourers want more days of work, better wages and a good local school. Prosperous Punjab farmers want higher support prices and cheap labour. Industrialists may want big dams for electricity, while tribal people whose land would be flooded may prefer small check dams or tanks. What is development for one group can harm another.
Don't confuse with
- Different goals vs conflicting goals: "Different" only means people want different things. "Conflicting" means one person's gain hurts another. Every conflicting goal is different, but not every different goal conflicts.
