Diagrammatic presentation
Topic: Economic Data: Census, NSS, Surveys and Statistical Tools · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 4 "Presentation of Data"
Meaning
Diagrammatic presentation shows data as pictures instead of words or tables. It is the quickest way to understand data, but it is less exact than a table. There are three main kinds:
- Geometric diagrams: bar diagrams and pie diagrams.
- Frequency diagrams: histogram, frequency polygon, frequency curve and ogive.
- Arithmetic line graphs: time on the X-axis, used to show trends.
Example
NCERT uses a pie diagram for Census 2011 working status. Main workers are 29.8% (107°), marginal workers 9.9% (36°) and non-workers 60.3% (217°). One look shows that most people were non-workers.
Don't confuse with
- Tabular presentation: data in rows and columns. It is more exact and suits further statistical work, but it is slower to read than a diagram.
