Earth Overshoot Day

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Environment and Sustainable Development · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

Earth Overshoot Day is the date each year when humanity's demand for nature exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in that year. After this date we live on "credit". We cut forests, catch fish and emit carbon faster than nature can replace or absorb them. It is calculated by comparing the global ecological footprint with the Earth's biocapacity, which is the productive capacity of its land and water.

Example

In 2025 Earth Overshoot Day fell on about 24 July. That means humanity used a full year's natural budget in under seven months. For the remaining five months, it ran down natural capital such as forests, fish stocks and aquifers.

Don't confuse with

  • Carbon budget: this is the total CO2 that can still be emitted while keeping warming under a set limit, such as 1.5°C. It is one cumulative total, not a yearly date, and it covers carbon only.
