Employment generation programmes
Topic: Employment, Unemployment and Informalisation · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 6 "Employment: Growth, Informalisation and Other Issues"
Meaning
Employment generation programmes are government anti-poverty schemes that give poor people jobs. The work also builds useful services and assets, such as primary health and education, drinking water, nutrition, housing, sanitation, rural roads and wasteland development. They serve two purposes: they give income now and create assets that help the village later.
Example
Under MGNREGA (2005), a rural household that asks for work is guaranteed 100 days of unskilled manual work a year. The labour builds water-conservation and land-development works that raise farm productivity. The 2025 replacement, VB-G RAM G, raises the guarantee to 125 days.
Don't confuse with
- Direct and indirect employment generation: that describes how any government activity creates jobs, directly or through linked private firms. Employment generation programmes are specific schemes aimed at the poor.
