Exclusive method

Indian Economy glossary

Also called: Exclusive class interval · Topic: Economic Data: Census, NSS, Surveys and Statistical Tools · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 3 "Organisation of Data"; Class 11, Ch 8 "Use of Statistical Tools"

Meaning

In the exclusive method of forming classes, the upper limit of each class is left out of that class and counted in the next class. The upper limit of one class is the same as the lower limit of the next, so the classes are continuous with no gaps. This makes the method suitable for continuous variables.

Example

With classes 10-20 and 20-30, a value of exactly 20 goes into the 20-30 class, not the 10-20 class. So the 10-20 class really means "10 and above but below 20".

Don't confuse with

  • Inclusive method: both limits belong to the class, as in 0-10 and 11-20, which leaves gaps between classes. To make these classes continuous, half the gap is taken off each lower limit and added to each upper limit, so 800-899 becomes 799.5-899.5.
