Facilitators of human capital
Topic: Human Capital: Education, Health and Demographic Dividend · NCERT: Class 8, Ch 7 "Factors of Production"
Meaning
Facilitators of human capital are the things that build up people's skills and ability to work. The main ones are education, training and good health. They raise workers' knowledge, their cognitive development (the growth of the ability to think, learn and remember) and their productivity (output per unit of input). Without them, a large population cannot turn into a skilled and productive workforce.
Example
A civil-engineering student learns design principles in class. The student then learns durable, cheap and eco-friendly building by visiting construction sites, testing materials and following safety procedures. Good health helps in the same way: a well-fed, healthy child attends school regularly and learns better, and a healthy worker does more in less time and misses fewer days through illness.
Don't confuse with
- Sources of human capital formation (Class 11): this is a wider list of five sources: education, health, on-the-job training, migration and information. The Class 8 facilitators are only education, training and good health.
