Fair globalisation
Topic: Globalisation and MNCs · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 4 "Globalisation and the Indian Economy"
Meaning
Fair globalisation is globalisation that creates opportunities for all and shares its benefits more fairly. So far, people with education, skills and wealth have gained the most. Class 10 gives the government a clear role:
- enforce labour laws properly
- support small producers until they can compete
- use trade and investment barriers if needed
- negotiate fairer WTO rules, working together with other developing countries
People's organisations can also influence WTO decisions through mass campaigns.
Example
The idea comes from the ILO's World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization. Its 2004 report is titled "A Fair Globalization: Creating Opportunities for All". One case it would address is Sushila, a Delhi garment worker. She lost a permanent job with benefits and moved to a temporary job paying less than half her old wage.
Don't confuse with
- Free trade: removing trade barriers. Free trade by itself does not ensure the gains are shared fairly.
