Goldilocks economy
Topic: Economic Growth Theories and Business Cycles · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
A Goldilocks economy has steady moderate growth, low inflation and low unemployment. It is "neither too hot nor too cold", like the porridge in the children's story. Growth is fast enough to create jobs. It is not so fast that prices start to spiral. Policymakers aim for this state because it can last.
Example
For India, a Goldilocks picture would be growth close to its potential of about 7% (Economic Survey 2025-26). Prices would stay low and stable, and jobs would keep growing. Growing at this speed avoids both overheating and slack.
Don't confuse with
- Overheating: demand grows faster than capacity, which pushes up inflation. A Goldilocks economy is growing at a pace it can sustain.
