Information and communication technology

Indian Economy glossary

Also called: ICT, IT · Topic: Globalisation and MNCs · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 4 "Globalisation and the Indian Economy"

Meaning

Information and communication technology (ICT or IT) covers telecommunications (telegraph, telephone, mobile phones, fax), computers and the internet. It allows instant contact, e-mail and voice-mail across the world at almost no cost. Satellites make this possible even from remote areas. ICT is a key driver of globalisation because it spreads the production of services across countries.

Example

A London magazine can be made in Delhi. The text is sent to Delhi over the internet, and design instructions come from London by telecom. The magazine is designed on computers and printed in Delhi, then flown to London. Payment moves from a London bank to a Delhi bank by e-banking.

Don't confuse with

  • Transport technology: containers and cheaper air freight. These move goods faster and more cheaply. ICT mainly moves information and services.
