Modified mixed reference period
Also called: MMRP · Topic: Economic Data: Census, NSS, Surveys and Statistical Tools · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 7 "Index Numbers"
Meaning
The modified mixed reference period (MMRP) is a recall method used in NSS consumption surveys since 2009-10. It uses three recall periods. For perishables it uses 7 days: edible oil, egg-fish-meat, vegetables, fruits, spices, beverages, processed food, and pan, tobacco and intoxicants. For infrequent purchases it uses 365 days: clothing, bedding, footwear, durables, education and institutional medical care. For everything else it uses 30 days. A short recall means people forget less, so MMRP records more spending and shows lower poverty than other methods.
Example
MMRP data from the NSS 2011-12 round gave the weights for the CPI with base 2012. The Rangarajan poverty line was also based on MMRP.
Don't confuse with
- Mixed reference period (MRP): MRP uses only 365 and 30 days, with no 7-day recall for perishables.
- Uniform reference period (URP): URP uses 30 days for all items.
