Moonlighting
Topic: Employment, Unemployment and Informalisation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Moonlighting means taking a second job alongside one's regular job. It is often done without the main employer knowing. It raises questions about conflict of interest, company secrets and loyalty to the main employer. For the worker, though, it can be a way to earn more or build new skills.
Example
In 2022, a dispute over moonlighting hit India's IT sector. Some firms dismissed staff who were secretly working for other companies after office hours.
Don't confuse with
- Subsidiary status work: a survey term for economic work done for at least 30 days in a year by someone whose main activity is different, such as a student who harvests for a month. It is about how surveys classify people, not about holding two jobs at once.
