Planetary boundaries
Topic: Environment and Sustainable Development · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Planetary boundaries are nine limits on the Earth's natural systems. Examples are climate change and biodiversity loss. Inside these limits, humanity can live safely. Crossing them raises the risk of large changes that cannot be undone. Johan Rockström and colleagues proposed the idea in 2009. Six boundaries had been crossed by 2023, and the 2025 Planetary Health Check counted seven.
Example
A country can grow its GDP quickly while still pushing the world past the climate boundary. So growth figures alone do not show whether we are inside safe limits. This is why the idea shows up in debates on green growth and degrowth.
Don't confuse with
- Carrying capacity: this is the limit for one environment or resource, where extraction stays within regeneration and waste stays within what can be absorbed. Planetary boundaries are nine limits for the whole Earth system.
- Doughnut economics: Kate Raworth adds a social foundation of basic needs as an inner floor. The planetary boundaries form the ecological ceiling of her doughnut.
