Plug-and-play infrastructure

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Infrastructure: Transport, Communications and Energy · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

Plug-and-play infrastructure means industrial plots that are fully ready before an investor arrives. The land is already acquired, and roads, power, water and approvals are all in place. The investor can "plug in" and start work almost at once. This removes the delays over land, clearances and utilities that usually slow down new factories, so it helps attract investment.

Example

In industrial corridor nodes such as Dholera (Gujarat) and Shendra-Bidkin (Maharashtra) on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, plots come with utilities and approvals ready. A manufacturer can start building its factory almost immediately instead of spending years arranging land and connections.

Don't confuse with

  • Greenfield project: A greenfield project is any new project built on undeveloped land. Plug-and-play means the government has prepared the site in advance, so the investor does not face those early delays.
