Portability

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Money: From Barter to Digital Currency · NCERT: Class 7, Ch 11 "From Barter to Money"

Meaning

Portability is whether an object can be carried easily from one place to another. Good money must be light and easy to carry, so people can take it to the market and pay anywhere. Barter goods are often heavy or bulky, which makes trade slow and tiring. Money solves this. Paper notes and digital money have made it even easier to move value from place to place.

Example

In barter, a farmer who needs shoes, a sweater and medicines must carry his ox or sacks of wheat from one seller to the next. With money, he can carry a few notes in his pocket, or simply pay by scanning a UPI QR code.
