Second Green Revolution
Topic: Land Reforms, the Green Revolution and Farm Subsidies · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Second Green Revolution is the proposed next phase of farm growth in India. The first Green Revolution was concentrated in the irrigated wheat and rice belt of Punjab, Haryana and western UP. It largely left out eastern India, rainfed (rain-dependent) areas, and crops like pulses, oilseeds and coarse cereals. The Second Green Revolution targets exactly these gaps. It relies on new technology and more careful use of water and soil.
Example
Bringing Green Revolution to Eastern India (BGREI) was launched in 2010-11 under RKVY (Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana). It helps farmers in eastern states raise rice and wheat yields through better seed, farming methods and water management. In these states, rainfall is good but yields have stayed low.
Don't confuse with
- Evergreen Revolution: this is M.S. Swaminathan's idea of raising yields for ever without harming the environment. It is about how to farm. The Second Green Revolution is mainly about where and which crops.
- Gene Revolution: this depends on genetic engineering. A Second Green Revolution can use many kinds of technology, not only GM crops.
