SME exchange

Indian Economy glossary

Also called: SME platform · Topic: Financial Markets, Instruments, Insurance and Pensions · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

An SME exchange is a separate platform on a stock exchange where small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can list their shares under lighter rules. Listing on the main board is costly and strict, so this platform helps smaller firms raise equity capital (money from selling shares) instead of relying only on bank loans. The lighter rules also carry more risk for investors. In 2025, SEBI tightened the rules after heavy speculation in SME IPOs.

Example

BSE SME, started in 2012, and NSE Emerge are India's two SME platforms. A small manufacturing firm can raise a few crore rupees through an IPO on one of these platforms.

Don't confuse with

  • Social stock exchange: a separate segment where non-profit and for-profit social enterprises raise money, often through donation-like Zero Coupon Zero Principal instruments. An SME exchange is for ordinary businesses that want to make a profit.
