Soonicorn
Topic: Industrial Policy, Public Sector, MSMEs and Disinvestment · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
A soonicorn is a startup expected to become a unicorn soon. A unicorn is a private startup valued at over US$1 billion. Investors and analysts use the label for fast-growing firms close to that mark. It is a forecast, not an official status, and some soonicorns never become unicorns.
Example
Take a fintech startup valued at US$700 million whose revenue is doubling each year. Investors might call it a soonicorn. Once a funding round values it above US$1 billion, it becomes a unicorn.
Don't confuse with
- Unicorn: a unicorn has actually crossed a $1 billion valuation. A soonicorn is only expected to cross it.
