Stub
Also called: Row heading · Topic: Economic Data: Census, NSS, Surveys and Statistical Tools · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 4 "Presentation of Data"
Meaning
A stub is the heading of a row in a statistical table. All the row headings together sit in the left-hand column, which is called the stub column. The stub tells the reader what each row is about. It is one of the standard parts of a table, along with the table number, title, caption, body, unit of measurement, source and note.
Example
Take a table of Census 2011 literacy for ages 7 and above. The rows are labelled "Male", "Female" and "Total", and these are the stubs. The columns "Rural", "Urban" and "Total" are the captions. For example, the cell where "Female" meets "Rural" reads 59%.
Don't confuse with
- Caption: this is the heading of a column, at the top of the table. The stub is the heading of a row, on the left side.
