Sustainable consumption and production
Also called: SCP · Topic: Environment and Sustainable Development · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) means making and using goods and services in ways that use fewer natural resources and less toxic material, and create less waste and pollution. It looks at a product's whole life cycle, which means every stage from raw material to disposal. It is SDG 12 (Sustainable Development Goal 12). India promotes it through Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment, 2022), which asks individuals to make careful, low-waste choices.
Example
India banned single-use plastics from 1 July 2022. That changes what firms produce and pushes shoppers to carry cloth bags. Switching off unused lights and repairing things instead of replacing them are LiFE-style consumption habits.
