Sweet Revolution

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Rural Development: Diversification, Allied Sectors and Organic Farming · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Sweet Revolution means the promotion of beekeeping and honey production. The National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (2020) drives it. Beekeeping needs little land, so it suits small farmers and rural women. Bees also raise crop yields through pollination, meaning they carry pollen from flower to flower. Honey adds income and is also exported.

Example

NCERT shows rural women taking up beekeeping as a business (Fig. 5.5, Class 11). A mustard farmer who keeps bee boxes at the field edge sells honey and also gets a better mustard crop from pollination.

Don't confuse with

  • Golden Revolution: this mainly means the growth of horticulture in 1991-2003, although the term is sometimes also used for honey. Sweet Revolution refers only to honey and beekeeping.
