Textual presentation

Indian Economy glossary

Also called: Descriptive presentation · Topic: Economic Data: Census, NSS, Surveys and Statistical Tools · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 4 "Presentation of Data"

Meaning

Textual presentation, or descriptive presentation, puts data inside ordinary sentences and paragraphs. It works well when there are only a few numbers. Its weakness is that the reader must go through the whole text to understand the data. Comparing many figures this way is hard.

Example

"According to Census 2001, India's population was 102 crore. Of these, 40 crore were workers and 62 crore were non-workers." With only three numbers, a sentence does the job well.

Don't confuse with

  • Tabular presentation: this puts data in rows and columns. It suits larger data sets and makes comparison and further analysis easy.
