Meaning

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a real-time, 24×7, interoperable payment system. It moves money straight from one bank account to another bank account through a mobile phone. The payer finds the person they are paying by a UPI ID, a mobile number or a QR code. NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India, the body that runs India's retail payment systems) launched it in April 2016.

  • It matters because it made digital payments instant, free for customers and cheap for even a street vendor. This pulled millions of people and small shops into formal finance.
  • The IMF (June 2025) called UPI the world's largest retail fast-payment system by transaction volume [3].

Explanation

How UPI works

  • Three key features:
  • Real-time: the money moves in seconds.
  • 24×7: it works at night and on holidays.
  • Interoperable: any UPI app can pay any bank account, including one linked to a different app. You and the person you pay do not need the same app or the same bank.

  • Two main types of payment:

  • P2P (person-to-person): for example, sending money to a friend.
  • P2M (person-to-merchant): for example, paying a shopkeeper.

  • How you name the payee:

  • a UPI ID, also called a virtual payment address (VPA), for example name@bank
  • a mobile number
  • a QR code
  • You do not need the payee's account number or IFSC (the 11-character code that identifies a bank branch). This keeps account details hidden and means fewer typing mistakes.

  • Steps in one payment (Class 7, Fig. 8.18: Kumar pays Piyush): 1. Kumar scans Piyush's QR code or types Piyush's mobile number. 2. Kumar enters the amount. 3. Kumar enters his UPI PIN. 4. Kumar's account is debited (money goes out) and Piyush's account is credited (money comes in), within a few seconds. 5. Both of them get a confirmation message.

Security design

  • Device binding: the account is tied to one phone and its SIM card. A stranger using a different phone cannot simply log in.
  • UPI PIN: a secret number the user types to approve each payment.
  • No wallet in between: the money does not first sit in a prepaid wallet. It goes from bank to bank.

QR codes and add-ons

  • QR (Quick Response) code: a square barcode that a machine can read. It stores the payee's details, such as a UPI ID or merchant ID. The payer scans it with a phone camera.
  • A printed QR card costs almost nothing. So a vendor can take digital payments without a card machine (POS terminal).
  • Class 7 example: Krishnappa, a fruit-seller, keeps a QR card on his cart, and "the payment then goes directly into Krishnappa's bank account."

  • Add-ons built on UPI:

Feature Year What it does Limit / detail
UPI AutoPay 2020 Recurring payments such as subscriptions and EMIs Works through a mandate (a standing permission to debit money on a schedule)
UPI 123PAY 2022 UPI for feature phones (basic phones without internet), using IVR or a missed call, with no app ₹10,000 per transaction [5]
UPI Lite 2022 Small payments from a balance stored in the app, with no PIN for each payment Wallet ₹5,000; ₹1,000 per transaction [5]
RuPay credit card on UPI 2022 Pay a merchant from a credit card through UPI RuPay is India's own card network, run by NPCI
Pre-sanctioned credit lines 2023 Use a credit line a bank has already approved Puts credit, not only deposits, on UPI
UPI Circle 2024 Delegated payments: a main user lets a trusted person pay within set limits Helps people who have no bank account of their own
  • Worked example (UPI Lite):
  • You load ₹5,000 into UPI Lite.
  • You buy tea for ₹20 and a bus ticket for ₹50. You do not need a PIN.
  • Balance left = ₹5,000 − ₹20 − ₹50 = ₹4,930.
  • A ₹1,500 payment cannot go through UPI Lite because it is above the ₹1,000 limit per transaction [5]. It must go through normal UPI with a PIN.
  • Why this helps: lots of tiny payments stop clogging the banks' main systems.

Why UPI spread

  • Interoperability: an IMF study found that interoperability was central to India's digital-payments growth. UPI grew fastest because people could pay across apps [4].
  • COVID-19: people wanted contactless, cashless payments so they could avoid touching cash (Class 7).
  • Ease: it works in many Indian languages.
  • Low cost: payments are free for customers, and a merchant needs only a QR card.
  • Where UPI sits in the payment story: cash → cheques → cards and net banking → mobile/UPI (2016 onwards). Each step made payments faster, cheaper and easier to reach.

In India

  • Who runs it: NPCI, a non-profit body. Private apps compete to offer services on top of this shared public system.
  • Timeline:
  • April 2016: NPCI launched UPI.
  • August 2016: UPI opened to the public.
  • December 2016: NPCI launched the BHIM app (Bharat Interface for Money).

  • Unit tip for exams: 1 billion = 100 crore, so 20 billion = 2,000 crore.

  • Latest scale:
  • Monthly records: UPI first crossed 2,000 crore (20 billion) transactions in a month in August 2025, with 2,001 crore [2]. December 2025 set a new record of 2,163 crore [2].
  • Calendar year 2025: about 22,000 crore transactions, or about 60 crore a day [2].
  • Growth from FY 2016-17 to FY 2025-26: volume rose from 2 crore to 24,162 crore transactions, and value rose from ₹0.07 lakh crore to about ₹314 lakh crore [2].
  • Compared with Visa: UPI handles more than 64 crore transactions a day, against about 63.9 crore for Visa [8].
  • Users: about 55.49 crore users onboarded as of June 2026 [7].
  • Share in India: about 85% of all digital transactions [6].
  • Share in the world: about 49% of global real-time payment volume (2024), according to ACI Worldwide data cited by the IMF [3].
  • All digital payments in India: over 18,000 crore transactions in 2024-25 [9].

  • UPI abroad:

  • NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL, set up in 2020) takes UPI and RuPay to other countries [6].
  • UPI is live in more than eight countries, including the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, Mauritius and Qatar [6].
  • Key "firsts":
    • Bhutan: first to accept BHIM-UPI QR (2021).
    • Nepal: first to adopt UPI as a payment platform (2022).
    • Singapore: the PayNow–UPI link (February 2023) was the first cross-border link between two fast-payment systems.
    • France: first in Europe (February 2024).
    • Trinidad and Tobago: first in the Caribbean.
  • UPI One World: a prepaid wallet linked to UPI. It lets foreign visitors pay by UPI without an Indian bank account.
  • Technology partnerships: NPCI helps countries such as Namibia build their own UPI-like systems.
  • BIS Project Nexus: a Bank for International Settlements plan to connect many national fast-payment systems through one hub, so each country connects only once. India joined in 2024, along with Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Don't confuse with

  • Mobile wallet: a wallet is a prepaid app. You must first load money into it. UPI moves money directly between bank accounts, with no wallet in between. (UPI Lite is the exception: it keeps a small balance stored in the app.)
  • BHIM: BHIM (December 2016) is one app made by NPCI. UPI is the system underneath it, and many apps run on UPI.
  • BharatQR (2016): one common QR code that accepts both card and UPI payments. It is not a UPI-only code.
  • NIPL vs RBI: NIPL (2020) is the NPCI subsidiary that takes UPI abroad. It is not an RBI body.

Prelims Hooks

  • NPCI launched UPI in April 2016. It opened to the public in August 2016, and BHIM came in December 2016.
  • UPI is real-time, 24×7 and interoperable. It needs no wallet, and you do not need the payee's account number or IFSC.
  • Two-factor security: device binding (phone + SIM) + UPI PIN.
  • UPI 123PAY is for feature phones, with a limit of ₹10,000 per transaction. UPI Lite needs no PIN for each payment, with a wallet limit of ₹5,000 and a limit of ₹1,000 per transaction [5].
  • Trap on "firsts": Bhutan was the first to accept UPI QR (2021). Nepal was the first to adopt UPI as a platform (2022). Singapore's PayNow gave the first link between two fast-payment systems (February 2023). France was the first in Europe (2024).
  • IMF (June 2025): UPI is the world's largest retail fast-payment system by volume, with about 49% of global real-time payment volume (2024) [3]. Within India, UPI is about 85% of digital transactions [6].

Mains Points

  • UPI as Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), relevant to GS-III and GS-II:
  • DPI means shared digital systems, such as Aadhaar and UPI, that anyone can build on.
  • A non-profit (NPCI) runs an open, interoperable system, and private apps compete on top of it. The IMF linked interoperability to UPI's fast growth [4].
  • India now exports this model: to Namibia through technology partnerships, and through BIS Project Nexus. This is a tool of soft power and DPI diplomacy.

  • Financial inclusion vs risks:

  • Gains:
    • QR cards let street vendors take digital payments.
    • 123PAY reaches feature-phone users, and UPI Circle lets people without an account pay within limits.
    • Credit lines on UPI create a digital record of payments, so small firms can more easily get formal loans.
  • Risks:

    • Concentration risk: about 85% of digital transactions run on one system [6], so any outage hits the whole country.
    • Fraud: scams trick people into approving payments with their PIN.
    • Funding: users pay no fee, so who pays to run the system? The government has run incentive schemes for low-value BHIM-UPI payments.
    • Data privacy.
  • External-sector gains:

  • Direct links between fast-payment systems (Singapore, Nexus) cut out costly middlemen. This makes remittances (money that migrants send home) cheaper, which matters because India is the world's largest receiver of remittances.
  • More payments settled in local currencies support rupee internationalisation and reduce dependence on the US dollar.
