Vocational education
Also called: Vocational training · Topic: Human Capital: Education, Health and Demographic Dividend · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Vocational education is education and training for a specific trade or occupation. It focuses on practical, job-ready skills instead of academic learning. It matters because it links schooling directly to work and reduces the gap between what students learn and what employers need. NEP 2020 (the National Education Policy 2020) aims to give vocational exposure in school to at least 50% of learners.
Example
A Class 10 student in Tamil Nadu joins a course in electrical wiring. He spends most of his time on hands-on practice with circuits and fittings. He finishes ready to work as an electrician, instead of only studying theory in a general degree.
Don't confuse with
- Apprenticeship: an apprenticeship is structured on-the-job training under an employer, combined with classroom learning, and the trainee receives a stipend. In India it is governed by the Apprentices Act 1961. Vocational education is usually given by a school or institute, not by an employer at the workplace.
