Akal Wood Fossil Park
Topic: Structure and Physiography of India: Himalayas, Plains, Peninsula, Coasts and Islands · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 2 "Structure and Physiography"
Meaning
Akal Wood Fossil Park is a site near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. It holds fossil tree trunks about 180 million years old. A fossil is the remains of a living thing that has slowly turned to stone. These trunks show that trees once grew in a place that is now the dry Thar desert. Together with marine deposits at Brahmsar, the park shows that this region lay under the sea in the Mesozoic era.
Example
At Akal, near Jaisalmer in western Rajasthan, large stone tree trunks lie in today's sandy desert. They show that the Thar region's past was very different from its dry present, where rain is under 150 mm a year.
