Animal-based industries

Geography glossary

Topic: Secondary Activities: Manufacturing and Industrial Location · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 5 "Secondary Activities"

Meaning

Animal-based industries use products that come from animals as their raw material. The main examples are leather for footwear and leather goods, wool for woollen textiles, and ivory from elephant tusks. The ivory trade is now heavily restricted. In 1989 the international treaty CITES (1973) placed African elephants on its Appendix I, its strictest list, which banned the international ivory trade. India also bans the trade in ivory within the country.

Example

Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh is a major leather centre that makes footwear and leather goods from animal hides. Agra, Chennai-Vellore-Ambur in Tamil Nadu, and Kolkata are other Indian leather clusters.
